Zverev underwent surgery due to an ankle injury received in the Roland Garros semi-finals

German World No. 3 Alexander Zverev announced that he underwent leg surgery after an injury suffered in the French Open semi-final against Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

During the second set, the 25-year-old tennis player twisted his leg and only managed to leave the court in a wheelchair, then appeared in front of the audience on crutches.

Each of us has our own path in life. It’s part of mine. Next week I will reach my career high of second place in the standings, but this morning I had to have surgery.

After an examination in Germany, we received confirmation that the three lateral ligaments of my right ankle had been torn. In order to resume competition as quickly as possible, to ensure that all the ligaments had healed properly and to regain perfect ankle stability, surgery was the best choice. My rehabilitation starts now and I will do my best to come back stronger than ever!

I continue to receive a lot of messages and I would like to thank everyone once again for their support in such a difficult time,” Zverev wrote on social media.

Zverev is the Olympic champion of the Tokyo Games, winner of 19 ATP singles tournaments.
