The national tennis player beat Brazil’s Matheus Pucinelli 7-6(5), 6-2 and secured his passage to the quarter-finals of the tournament. He now has to face Gerald Melzer, world number 217.
Nicolás Jarry (139th) continues his progress in the Mexico City Challenger. He won in the second round of the tournament by 7-6(5) and 6-2 against Brazilian Matheus Pucinelli (225th) and fought his way to the quarter-finals. His performance during the week gives him 25 points, remaining 134 in the world at the moment.
It was a match where Jarry had to stay focused and brave, especially in the first set. His rival quickly moved into the service of the national (somewhat surprising, because at height he is generally much more efficient) and managed to break through from the start. Thus, the Chilean number three lived by being behind the scoreboard throughout this quarter. Same he had to save two set points when his opponent served 5-4.
Then in the tie-break, he continued to suffer. He started badly and was 2-4 in that definition. Moment when he managed to keep his composure and recover from the mini break to stay at the top of the scoreboard. He was in the third set point in favor where he was finally able to fix the partial and clench your fist.
A change in the game is that after taking the first, Jarry grew and his rival lost the north. Like in the round of 16 match, the Chilean showed himself to be visibly superior after winning the first round in narrow fashion. Much more consistent on the serve and smarter on the return, the match opened comfortably for him.
After an hour and 55 minutes , the man from Santiago managed to take the duel and secure a new presence in the quarter-finals of a Challenger tournament. Now the Austrian must be measured Gerald Melzer (271°) with whom he has an unreliable track record, having lost twice and only having one win.
With this, Nicolás Jarry adds 25 points this week and manages to climb to 134th place in the ATP rankings. His best record since returning to the circuit in January 2021 after eleven months of suspension.
