Why do cats like Churu so much?

The first time Javiera vaccinated her little cat Clemente, she was nervous. It’s her first pet and somehow she felt something maternal that she hadn’t experienced until that minute. Clemente was smaller than his phone then, a helpless ball of black hair and blue eyes. A veterinarian who visited her at home, with great patience and affection, told her that for her peace of mind and that of the kitty, they would apply the dose, but before the puncture she opened a long sachet . It had the name Churu printed on it.

“I had never heard my kitten make that sound,” says Javiera, who still thinks that at that moment Clemente had some kind of cat-like cooking orgasm. He had never tasted this type of food, but after tasting it, he didn’t even complain about the bites; he abandoned himself completely to the power of this new delicacy.

About seven months have passed since this experience and the cat really loves this snack. He identifies them, knows where they are kept, and when the time comes to receive one, his love for her is so powerful that he purrs and performs the most spectacular graces to eat it.

But that’s not something particular to Clemente: he’s just one of those cats who go crazy for this kind of irresistible feline pâté. On TikTok and other social networks, there are several videos in which these cats can be seen enjoying this “delicacy”.

Veterinarian Laura Lust, a cat specialist, explains that “cats are carried away more by smell than by taste. As these wet foods contain 60 or 70% water, in addition to protein of animal origin, they are much more palatable for them”.

“Its success is mainly due to the texture of the product, which is easy to digest and also has a very good flavor”, explains Sebastián Quintanilla, co-founder of the Lofis Catstore, specializing in felines, and owner of 5 cats. . Regarding the famous Churu, he explains that it is “a grain-free product, which means that it is composed of animal protein”, which is precisely the main nutrient that cats need. He also adds that “it is a product without preservatives or artificial colors, which makes it a natural and healthy product”.

Tuna churu, for example, is made from water, tuna, tapioca—which is starch that comes from cassava—natural tuna flavor, natural flavors, guar gum, fructo-oligosaccharides, vitamin E supplement and green tea extract.

Another virtue of this type of snack, explains Lust, is that “they are low in carbohydrates, which is good because cats are strict carnivores. In addition, being moist, this type of food promotes water consumption, since the cat is known to be a bad drinker.

In case you didn’t know, “wet food, in any of its formats, has multiple health benefits for our kittens,” says Lust. Among its benefits are increased water consumption, improved hydration and urinary functionality, prevention of possible long-term urinary tract diseases,” he explains.

Another good use for the Churu is when you need to give medication to cats, which are often resistant to ingesting it. This is what Paulina, owner of Seth, Mut and Ñau, three cats whose remedies she makes up with this snack, does and always gets good results. The same technique is used when they are vaccinated, if they are sick or in case their claws need to be cut.

“With these snacks we are also improving the owner/pet relationship, because they will see it as a reward. The important thing is always to seek advice from professionals and to buy these products in safe places and that they are from good quality”, completes Lust.

Churu-type products are generally used as rewards, to reinforce certain behaviors or to generate a moment of pleasure. According to Lust, for it to have a good effect “a lot depends on the nutritional quality of the treat or wet food,” so it’s important to read and interpret the nutritional information before buying one.

“You have to make sure that the first ingredients are of animal origin and that they are as clear as possible”, specifies the veterinarian. In any case, before arriving and buying a batch in supermarkets, “the ideal is always to seek advice from a veterinarian, we hope dedicated to feline nutrition”.

“The first ingredient on the list is always the one that comes in the greatest proportion,” Quintanilla shares, “and they go in descending order.” Therefore, if an animal protein appears at the beginning and there are not too many chemical additions, then it is a recommended product.

If he meets these requirements, can we give him Churu every day? Lust says it can be given about three times a week, although if opting for another brand or type of treat, Quintanilla recommends not giving it so frequently “because it doesn’t it’s not about whole foods like the pellets they eat”.
