Wimbledon stripped of ranking points to pay record fee in 2022

UK Wimbledon Tennis Tournament Press Service announcement the amount of prize money that athletes will receive for participating in the current draw.

The total prize was £40.35m (over €47m), with the winners of the men’s and women’s raffle receiving £2m each.

Compared to the previous season, the tournament prize fund increased by 11.1%, in 2019 the number of prizes was 5.4% lower. Thus, the next Wimbledon draw will be the highest paid in history.

Previously, Wimbledon organizers decided not to allow tennis players from Russia and Belarus to participate, even in neutral status. This decision was criticized by the ATP, WTA and top players, and the tournament was subsequently stripped of ranking points for the current season.

On Thursday, the head of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, speaking at the general assembly of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) in Lausanne, also came out in favor of the Russians, citing a example of violation of their rights by Wimbledon management. Bach said athletes shouldn’t suffer just because of their nationality.
