“We will be happy to return the ranking points to Wimbledon if they overturn the ban on Russians and Belarusians” – ATP chief

Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) chief Andrea Gaudenzi has said Wimbledon organizers should reconsider their decision to withdraw Russian and Belarus players. In this case, the tournament may return the ranking status.

– The reasons why we took the points at Wimbledon are known. This is a matter of fairness and discrimination, the decision was made in response to the actions of the organizers, which we do not consider to be correct. Such measures should be introduced after collective discussion.

We would be happy to restore Wimbledon to its status as a ranking tournament if the ban on Russians and Belarusians is lifted. In terms of ATP rankings, we want to have a situation where every player in 2022 has access to an equal number of points. It’s the only way to get a fair rating by the end of the season. If we defend the positions of those who played well at Wimbledon in 2021, then we will do even more unfairness to those who played well in 2022. We cannot accept seven or eight tennis players and hurt everyone else. Unfortunately, the points for participation in Wimbledon this year will not be in the final standings, but from our point of view we are doing the right thing, and the WTA agrees with us”, quotes the Gaudenzi portal. Ubitennis .

Wimbledon will be held in the UK from June 27 to July 10. The amount of prizes this season will be a record in the history of the tournament and will amount to 40.3 million pounds.
