While the world eight becomes the first finalist of the Masters 1000 which takes place in Florida, the transandine manages to climb more than 50 places in the world ranking. The match was in the hands of the Norwegian 6-4 and 6-1.
End of the dream story of Argentinian Francisco Cerúndolo (102°). Coming into the Miami Open semifinals and becoming a completely different player to the one who arrived at Miami Garden a week and a half ago, he said goodbye to the best tournament of his career so far. His executioner was world number eight Casper Ruud, who reached his first Masters 1000 final on hard court after beating him 6-4, 6-1 .
The match showed Francisco unable to take advantage of the opportunities that presented themselves along the way, mainly in the second set. Thus, from a very disputed first set, he goes on to a final set where he ends up giving up a lot of ground.
But everything is positive for the Argentinian. Although he could not reach the final of the tournament, the high level displayed allowed him to climb more than fifty places in the world rankings. He started as 102 in the world and this Monday he will appear in box 51 of the ATP . He also became the first South American, since Del Potro in 2018, to be a Miami Masters 1000 semi-finalist.
Ruud, for his part, made his first Masters 1000 final on asphalt and validated his position in the Top Ten. In the title match he will have to face the winner of the duel between Hubert Hurkacz (10th) and Carlos Alcaraz (16th) . Tough rivals, but they don’t scare the Norwegian off, having just beaten the likes of Alexander Zverev and Cameron Norrie.
