Marcelo Ríos will play an exhibition duel against Alex Corretja

The former world number one will play a match against the Spaniard on July 1 at the Gran Arena Monticello.

Marcelo Ríos will return to a tennis court. The former world number one will have an exhibition duel against an old acquaintance: the Spaniard Alex Corretja. This meeting will take place next Friday, July 1, at the Gran Arena Monticello, at 10:00 p.m.

This game will remember the 10 games played between 1995 and 2002, and will mark the tiebreaker after the record reflects five wins for each. The first confrontation between Ríos and Corretja dates back to 1995, on the clay courts of Amsterdam, with a victory for Chino 7-6 (3), 6-4. The last official duel dates back to 2002, at the Miami Masters 1000, with the Chilean victory on a 6-2 double.

The two former tennis figures have played in two finals during their careers, both in 1997. At the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, Ríos won 6-4, 6-3 and 6-3. Corretja got his revenge at the Masters 1000 in Rome, winning 7-5, 7-5, 6-3.

“It’s going to be a very entertaining game, because they’re one of the closest rivals of my career. I had an injury and that kept me from playing against (Nick) Kyrgios, so I went undercover and I have to have surgery, so this match with Corretja is out.” Ríos said in dialogue with Radio Cooperativa.

“In an exhibition, people know it, I try to make it something entertaining and I prepare for it. It will be a blue carpet court. It’s fun to play at Monticello, it’s entertaining for people and for yourself,” he added.
