Additionally, he promised to donate the tournament money to his country’s military.
“It has been an extremely difficult few months for me, not only mentally but also physically. For some time I have been suffering from my back. The pain did not allow me to prepare for the tournaments as well as possible”, he wrote on his social networks.
“Meanwhile, watching with excruciating pain in my heart what is happening in my home country of Ukraine…gave me a huge boost to keep going and fighting on the pitch.” he said, then added: “Now my body can’t take it anymore and I need to rest. Therefore, it saddens me to announce that I will not be participating in the Fed Cup and some of my favorite tournaments in Europe.”
Ukraine to face USA in best-of-five tie at Billie Jean King Tournament , formerly known as Fed Cup, on April 15-16. The bracket will be played on an indoor hard court in Asheville, North Carolina. Winners qualify for the 2022 Finals, to be held in November.
