Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina collapses and will stop for a while to recover physically and mentally

The Russian invasion motivated the player to continue representing her country in different tournaments, despite back discomfort. However, her body could not resist the effort and forced her to descend for an indefinite period.

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina has announced that she will be on hiatus for a while, due to back discomfort and also because of the stress she has had from competing as her country is invaded by Russia. Despite this, the wife of Gael Monfils competed in Indian Wells and Miami, where she was eliminated in the first, but reached the quarterfinals of the Monterrey Open. Additionally, he promised to donate the tournament money to his country’s military.

“It has been an extremely difficult few months for me, not only mentally but also physically. For some time I have been suffering from my back. The pain did not allow me to prepare for the tournaments as well as possible”, he wrote on his social networks.

“Meanwhile, watching with excruciating pain in my heart what is happening in my home country of Ukraine…gave me a huge boost to keep going and fighting on the pitch.” he said, then added: “Now my body can’t take it anymore and I need to rest. Therefore, it saddens me to announce that I will not be participating in the Fed Cup and some of my favorite tournaments in Europe.”

Ukraine to face USA in best-of-five tie at Billie Jean King Tournament , formerly known as Fed Cup, on April 15-16. The bracket will be played on an indoor hard court in Asheville, North Carolina. Winners qualify for the 2022 Finals, to be held in November.
