The Ukrainian supports the ban on the performance of players from Russia and Belarus
Ukrainian tennis player Alexander Dolgopolov reacted to the decision Wimbledon uphold the decision to suspend Russian and Belarusian athletes.
“I fully support this ban [на отстранение игроков из россии и беларуси]. The Russian players have not distanced themselves from their government, despite the fact that they have huge public influence, ”explained Alexander.
“In my opinion, this justifies the fact that most of them support Putin, like about 70-80% of the population of Russia. It would be a type of psychological abuse against Ukrainian players if they had to compete with other players who might support the killing and destruction of their own families.”
“Unfortunately, the Association of Tennis Professionals does not seem to mind the fact that Ukrainians are suffering because of the war. Ultimately, they decided to protect the Russian and Belarusian players who did not speak out against the barbaric actions of their countries. If the tennis world decides to have blood on their hands, so be it.”
Earlier, the organizers of Wimbledon issued a statement amid the decision of the ATP, WTA and ITF not to award rating points for participation in the tournament. The British noted that Russia regularly uses athletes for propaganda purposes.
In April, the British Tennis Association (LTA) suspended Russian and Belarusian players from this year’s grass tournaments due to a full-blown Russian-backed invasion of Ukraine.
