Athletistic/Tennis. Shamil Tarpishchev, president of the Russian Tennis Federation (FTR), spoke about the state of Russian tennis players ahead of the Roland Garros tournament and commented on Rafael Nadal’s decision to skip the tournament.
Tarpishchev noted that when gauging Russian players’ chances at Roland Garros, the draw is important, as they don’t play as well on unpaved surfaces as they do on hard courts. He also mentioned the importance of rivals, which can be both convenient and unpleasant.
He said that Andrey Rublev gave up a bit and that Daniil Medvedev and Karen Khachanov were in good shape, also noting the positive state of the tennis players.
Regarding Rafael Nadal’s absence from the tournament, Tarpishchev noted that this could no longer affect the results, because over the past year the Spanish tennis player has shown uneven play. Tarpishchev expressed hope for Nadal’s return next year as, in his view, tennis would lose without him.
