Rune and Medvedev will host the Masters 1000 final in Rome

This Saturday Holger Rune (7th) and Daniil Medvedev (3rd) became the Rome Masters 1000 finalists after beating Casper Ruud (4th) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (5th) respectively. in the round of the best four of the competition which takes place at the Foro Itálico.

In the first match of the day, the Dane and the Norwegian faced off, in a match that lasted 2 hours and 43 minutes, and ended in favor of the native of Gentofte by partials of 6-7 (2), 6-4 and 6-2.

The two tennis players were solid with their serves at the start of the match, a regularity which they maintained throughout the set, having to define the winner of the first round thanks to the tie-break, which finally tipped over Ruud 7-2.

In the second set, the Norwegian held on to the lead and – thanks to a break made in the fifth game – then made it 4-2. But Rune reacted, chaining four consecutive games that allowed him to close the set at 6-4.

Already in the final round, the Dane took advantage of the emotional momentum and with two breaks -in the fourth and eighth games- closed the duel after winning the last set 6-2.

In this way, Holger Rune won his first victory over Casper Ruud (1-4 in the history of confrontations) and this Sunday he will seek the fifth title of his career and the second in this category, after having celebrated it at the Masters 1000 from Paris. in 2022.

Rain and Tsitsipas can’t with Medvedev

In the substantive duel, Daniil Medvedev (3rd) became the tournament’s second runner-up, after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas (5th) in straight sets 7-5, 7-5 in 1h47.

In the first part, which suffered constant interruptions due to the rains that fell on the Italian capital the Russian struck first staying ahead with his rival’s serve, an advantage he maintained until the eighth game, when the Greek managed to level the score 4-4.

However, the former world No. 1 broke again in the eleventh game, an opportunity he took advantage of to later close the set 7-5.

In the second set, Medvedev maintained his supremacy, breaking Hellene’s serve in the opener. But Tsitsipas responded later to leave the set in a draw, leveling 3-3.

But the Moscow native released his best shots in the home stretch of the game, earning another break which he then confirmed with his serve to win the duel 7-5.

This Sunday, Medvedev – who added his eighth victory in 12 duels with Tsitsipas – will aim for his twentieth title and the sixth Masters 1000 of his career against Holger Rune, with whom he fell in the only confrontation between the two (quarter-finals of Monte Carlo 2023). .
