Tarpishchev: ‘I wouldn’t call Medvedev a favorite at Roland Garros, despite the victory in Rome’

President of the Russian Tennis Federation (RTF) Shamil Tarpishchev told he wouldn’t count Daniel Medvedev to the favorites of Roland Garros, despite the victory of the Russian on the clay Masters of Rome.

Medvedev won the Masters tournament in Rome on Sunday, beating Dane Holger Rune 7:5, 7:5 in the final. For the Russian, it is the first title of a tournament on clay. Roland Garros will be held in Paris from May 22 to June 11.

– I have already noted that Medvedev has become much better at playing on clay surfaces in recent years. It’s good for the preparation of the Olympics, where there will be the same coverage. In terms of the quality of the game, it looks good, but some points remain to be worked on.

Daniil is now in one of his best forms of his career, in terms of stamina he looks great. It’s good that he’s up to it. As for his prospects at Roland Garros, I wouldn’t call him a favourite, despite winning the Masters. There are a lot of uncomfortable opponents on the pitch, so the outcome will greatly depend on who he meets, Tarpishchev told .

Medvedev will move from third to second place in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings on Monday.
