French tennis player Hugo Gaston was fined $144,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct in a game against a Croatian Borny Chorica at the Madrid Masters tournament, according to L’Equipe.
The second-round match took place on April 28. At the end of the first set, Gaston deliberately drops the ball from his pocket in one of the draws with the score 5:3 in favor of Coric, so the referee stops play and asks for the point to be replayed. However, the referee left the episode without attention. As a result, the game ended in victory for the Croatian with the score 6:3, 6:3.
The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) has looked into the incident and called the 22-year-old Frenchman’s act ‘unsportsmanlike conduct’. We note that last year Gaston received a warning from the ATP for a similar gesture.
Gaston is ranked 108th in the world rankings. The Frenchman has earned $121,000 in prize money this season.
