“I thought Russian athletes would compete in the US Open” – Yanchuk

Russia’s honored tennis coach Viktor Yanchuk has commented on the decision of the American Tennis Association (USTA) to allow Russian players into the US Open – 2022.

On Tuesday, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) said it would allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete under a neutral flag at the US Open. Earlier, representatives from Russia and Belarus were suspended from Wimbledon and other tournaments in the UK due to the situation in Ukraine. Later, the ATP and WTA stripped the Grand Slam tournament of ranking points.

– I thought that Russian athletes would participate in the US Open, and that’s how it all happened. What England did was an unprecedented, unexpected and counter-intuitive move. It was hard to expect other tournament organizers to support the same decision. Now I will support our guys, maybe Medvedev will come to his senses then and try to repeat last year’s success, – quotes Yanchuk “Championship”.

The US Open will be held in New York from August 29 to September 11.
