Athletistic/Tennis. Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva qualified for the French Open main draw after beating Colombian Maria Camila Osorio Serrano in the final.

Notable victories began to come to Mirra last season – she won four tournaments under the auspices of the International Tennis Federation, played a match at the Women’s Tennis Association level in Monastir and made her debut in the top 300 ranking.

At the beginning of this year, Andreeva proved that she is rightly considered one of the most promising tennis players in the world. The Russian reached the final of the Australian Open junior, where she lost to her compatriot Alina Korneeva.

With the start of the clay season, Andreeva, by the way, did not lose positions in the rankings, she added. She won two ITF tournaments in Switzerland in April. In five matches in Chiasso she lost only one set and in the Bellinzona tournament she lost only two matches. After that, she was invited to a tournament in Madrid.

The 16-year-old Russian has become one of the main characters of the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid. The young tennis player entered the competition thanks to a wild card and was able to beat in one week the finalist of the US Open-2021 Leila Fernandez, the world n°14 Beatriz Haddad Maia and the semi-finalist of the Australian Open-2023 Magda Lynette. Having beaten three rivals in Madrid, Andreeva broke the record – she became the youngest tennis player to reach the 1/8 finals of the WTA-1000 tournaments.

In an interview with “Championship”, Mirra admitted that such results were a big eye-opener for her: “Actually, it’s strange for me to feel like one of the strongest: going to the locker room together, m ‘warming up next to me, but it’s a nice feeling.

Although Mirra couldn’t reach the quarter-finals in Madrid, losing to Belarusian Arina Sobolenko, they started comparing her to Maria Sharapova. Athletes are similar not only in hair color, but also in their behavior on the field – Mirra loves powerful blows and behaves the same emotionally.

Soviet tennis player Andrei Olkhovsky admired the game of the young tennis player: “Mirra was the tournament opener for everyone. At such a young age, few people show such a level of play. Psychologically, she is completely ready – she goes out, fights and beats. She is one of the most promising athletes in women’s tennis today”.

Now Andreeva is on the 143rd line in the world ranking. Mirra will make her Roland Garros debut on May 28. Perhaps we are witnessing the rise of Russia’s leading tennis star for the next decade.
