The legendary American has not played at a professional level since the summer of 2021
Organizers Wimbledon 2022 published a list of owners wild card for the upcoming Grand Slam tournament.
The invitation was received by a 40-year-old Serena Williams. The 23-time Grand Slam champion has not played at a professional level since June 2021, when she withdrew from her Wimbledon first-round match against Alexandra Sasnovich.
Also five Britons Cathy Bulter, Jodie Burrage, Sonay Kartal, Yuriko Miyazaki and Cathy Swan received a wild card in the women’s tournament. The owners of two more invitations will be announced later.
Three-time Grand Slam winner received a wild card into the men’s tournament Stan Wawrinka. Also, invitations were given to the Dutchman Tim van Reithoven, the British Liam Brodie, Jay Clarke, Alistair Gray, Paul Jabb and Ryan Peniston.
Wimbledon starts June 27th. ATP, WTA and ITF will not award rating points for performances in the tournament due to the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in the tournament.
