Wimbledon organizers may be forced to withdraw Russians due to pressure, says Olympic champion Elena Vesnina .
– Wimbledon in this regard has always been different from other Grand Slam tournaments. It can be recalled that during the pandemic, it was the only major not to organize competitions at all, and was immediately canceled.
The organizers of the Wimbledon tournament themselves had their arms twisted. It is quite possible that some of them were against the withdrawal of Russians and Belarusians, but they had no choice. However, it’s hard to say for sure about that, because we don’t know exactly who ultimately made that decision,” Vesnina told RT.
Representatives of Russia and Belarus have been suspended from Wimbledon and other UK tournaments due to the situation in Ukraine. Later, the ATP and WTA stripped this Grand Slam tournament of ranking points.
The American Tennis Association (USTA) announced on June 14 that it would allow Russian and Belarusian athletes under neutral flag to participate in the US Open.
