US Open didn’t want to risk dropping points, says Vesnina

US Open organizers didn’t want to risk being sanctioned by ATP and WTA like they did with Wimbledon, says Olympic champion Elena Vesnina.

On Tuesday, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) said it would allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete under a neutral flag at the US Open. Earlier, representatives from Russia and Belarus were suspended from Wimbledon and other tournaments in the UK due to the situation in Ukraine. Later, the ATP and WTA stripped the Grand Slam tournament of ranking points.

– It seems to me that Wimbledon’s decision to disqualify Russian and Belarusian players is a road to nowhere. Sport must federate. And tennis players have always been primarily individual athletes who have represented themselves on the professional circuit. The WTA and ATP have shown incredible resilience in the face of enormous pressure from many organizations.

So the US Open has decided that it’s not worth it, because it’s not the right way to resolve this situation. Dialogue is always necessary and one must try to be separated from the political situation. The US Open didn’t want to risk the fact that players could be deprived of points, and that doesn’t benefit anyone, Vesnina told RT.

The US Open will be held in New York from August 29 to September 11.
