The American Tennis Association (USTA) has announced that it will allow Russian and Belarusian athletes under neutral flag to participate in the US Open, the tournament press service reports.
The USTA will allow selected athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete in the 2022 US Open, but only under a neutral flag.
We recognize that every organization faces unique circumstances that affect its decisions. Based on our own circumstances, the USTA will allow all eligible players, regardless of nationality, to participate in the US Open,” the statement read.
Previously, Russian tennis players were suspended from Wimbledon and other tournaments in the UK due to the situation in Ukraine. Later, the ATP and WTA stripped the Grand Slam tournament of ranking points.
The US Open will be held in New York from August 29 to September 11.
