The world number two, and brand new Italian Masters 1000 champion, lost in the first round to Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild, ranked 172nd.
Despite the good feelings displayed on clay, Roland Garros was not the tournament of Daniil Medvedev (2nd ATP). The Russian bid farewell to the first round of the French Grand Slam at losing 7-6, 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 against Thiago Seyboth Wild (172nd), who had qualified for the main draw via qualifying.
A match that also shows Medvedev again more annoyed by the public. After a ball recovered against him in the fourth set, the Russian silenced the stands who demanded his insistence not to trust the referee’s mark. Faced with relentless boos, the former world number one engaged in a discussion that continued throughout the game.
Even in the fifth set and when the match was at a decisive moment, the support of the French was evident with the Brazilian tennis player who was applauded en masse for each of his points. Medvedev, for his part, demanded the same when he got spectacular wins or reactions, but that only made the home fans angrier.
The defeat of the Russian cut short the good progress he had shown on clay in 2023, where he even won his first title on the surface. Nothing less than the Masters 1000 in Rome, one of the most important events on the calendar. Before that, he made the knockout stages of the Masters 1000 in Madrid and the quarter-finals of the Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo.
