Djokovic on action at Roland Garros: ‘I understand that many won’t agree with me, but that’s what I stand for’

Multiple Serbian Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic said he was not going back on his statement on Kosovo, made after the first round match at Roland-Garros.

On Monday, Djokovic outplayed US representative Aleksandar Kovacevic in the first round of Roland Garros and after the match wrote on a video camera where players traditionally leave autographs: “Kosovo is the heart of Serbia. Stop the violence.”

After everything you’ve been through for the past few years, you’d probably like to have a drama-free grand slam. Could you talk about your thought process, did you think, “Do I really want to take on all of this, knowing how explosive a subject this can be?”

– I would repeat it, but I don’t need to, because you have my quotes. I understand that many will disagree with me, but it’s true. That’s what I stand for,” Djokovic told a press conference. – A drama-free Grand Slam tournament – I don’t think that can happen to me. It probably motivates me too.

– What do you think of the comment of the Minister of Sports of France? She said it was inappropriate. Have you met Amélie Mauresmo (Director of Roland Garros – approx.) to talk about it?

– No. I have no further comments on this. I said what I had to say.

In the second round of the tournament, Djokovic (3rd seed) defeated the Hungarian Marton Fucovich – 7:6 (7:2), 6:0, 6:3. The Serbian’s next opponent will be Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina (29).
