Former French world n°6 Gael Monfils announced that he had ended his performances at Roland Garros due to a wrist injury.
Monfils beat Argentinian Sebastian Baez in the first round in five sets. The 36-year-old tennis player was due to face a Dane in the second round Holger Rune (6th seed number).
“Physically I’m perfectly fine, in the morning I was pretty happy. But I have a problem with my left wrist that I can’t solve. I felt it during the game. The doctor said you shouldn’t not play with such an injury. In the first round it was very risky, and later I was told that I had to stop.
During the game I called a physical therapist for a few minutes and then thought I could take care of it myself. In the evening we used ice cream, thinking everything was fine. When I woke up, I took a lot of anti-inflammatories. Everything was fine. But during training, I felt the pain was still there.
If there is a (recovery) period, it is several weeks. Not many weeks. The doctor expressed hope that I would be able to play on grass, Monfils told a press conference.
Monfils is a two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist.
