The International Tennis Federation (ITF) will not impose sanctions on the Serb Novak Djokovic for talking about Kosovo at Roland-Garros.
Djokovic on Monday, after winning the first round of Roland Garros, wrote on a video camera where players traditionally leave autographs: “Kosovo is the heart of Serbia. Stop the violence.”
– The rules of conduct for players at a Grand Slam tournament are determined by the Grand Slam regulations issued by the organizer and the relevant regulatory body. Nothing in these regulations prohibits players’ political statements, L’Equipe quotes an ITF statement.
The Kosovo Olympic Committee previously demanded disciplinary proceedings against Djokovic. The ITF confirmed it had received a letter from the Kosovo Tennis Federation and also said it had “forwarded it to the organizations responsible for organizing the Grand Slam tournaments”.
L’Equipe note that the rules do not prohibit political speech, but there is a Roland Garros code of ethics which states that religious and political gestures are not allowed.
