russian woman Mirra Andreeva became the seventh tennis player under the age of 17 to reach the third round in singles at Roland-Garros, reports statistics service OptaAce.
On Thursday, 16-year-old Andreeva qualified for the third round of the tournament by beating France’s Diana Parry (6:1. 6:2).
Before her, at 17, the third round of Roland Garros had been reached by Russian Anna Kournikova (twice – 1997, 1998), Croatian Iva Maioli (1993, 1994), Switzerland Martina Hingis (1995-1997), American Serena Williams. (1998), the Bulgarian Cecil Karatancheva (2005) and Michel Larcher de Brito (2009) from Portugal. At the same time, Majoli, Hingis and Williams eventually became the tournament finalists.
Andreeva’s next opponent in the tournament will be the winner of the match between Julia Graber (Austria) and Corey Gauff (USA).
