Athletistic/Tennis. Just a week ago, Andrey Rublev looked well prepared for a long run at Roland Garros 2023. The mighty Russian claimed his biggest ever clay-court title at this year’s Monte-Carlo Masters and placed among the eight seeds in Paris. However, on Friday, it all fell apart.

As in the first days of the tournament, there were a lot of sensations on Friday and Andrei Rublev was not the only victim.

The main disappointments of the sixth day of the tournament:

Andrei Rublev

For seventh seed Andrey Rublev on Suzanne Lenglet’s court, two sets against Italy’s Sonego went pretty well. The Russian started strong and took a 7-5, 6-0 lead.

But something changed at the start of the third set in Rublev’s game. Sonego took a break and led 3:1, then he calmly took his serve and won the set 6:3. In the fourth set, the Italian also quickly took a break, but did not hold his service only once came to a tie-break, and there Rublev faltered in the most decisive moment with the score 5:6. The only throw lost in the tie-break decided the outcome of the set, delighted Sonego equalized.

In the middle of the fifth set, Rublev and Sonego failed to achieve 2 break points each, for the serving tennis players, in the end, everything went well. And again, at the decisive moment of the match, it was Rublev who made a mistake: Andrey gave the field with the score 3:4. Sonego only had to bid for a set and the Italian closed the game on the first match point.

For the first time in his career, Rublev lost a match in which he was leading 2-0 in sets, as Sonego beat a top 10 opponent at TBS for the first time and for the sixth time if all ATP tournaments are included . In the 1/8 finals, Sonego will meet another Russian Karen Khachanov.

Jessica Pegula

Jessica Pegula, seeded third in the women’s category, failed to pass Belgium’s Elisa Mertens.

Mertens started the match very powerfully and in the first set she simply dominated the field, winning it 6:1.

In the second set, Pegula started to play much more collected, but Mertens didn’t give up. The Belgian read the game very well and was mostly two steps ahead of her opponent. In the end, it was her controlled aggression and willingness to chase every ball that helped her win 6-1, 6-3.

Mertens will face former French Open runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the next round.

Anastasia Potapova

Former French Open runner-up Pavlyuchenkova won the battle of two Anastasias on Court 14, continuing her triumphant comeback after a long injury break.

Midway through the first set, Pavlyuchenkov and Potapov traded breaks, then in the tiebreaking 10th game, the world’s 25th racket put pressure on his opponent and won the opener.

In the second set, Pavlyuchenkova increased the pressure with powerful shots. Improvement of the first service and reduction of the number of errors. As a result, at the decisive moment, with the score 3:4, she made two breaks and won the set 6:3.

In the third set, Potapova completely collapsed, she was literally not on the court. As a result, Anastasia received a bagel from Pavlyuchenkova and lost the match 6:4, 3:6, 0:6. Pavlyuchenkova’s next opponent is Elise Mertens. Also, among the Russians, Daria Kasatkina went further, beating Payton Stearns, as well as lucky loser Elina Avanesyan, who knocked out Denmark’s Clara Tauson. Only Karen Khachanov, who beat Tanasi Kokkinakis, remained in the male part of the table.
