World number 11 Khachanov faced a serious test against Australian Tanasi Kokkinakis in the third round. The Russian was superb in the first two sets, dropping just five games before Kokkinakis closed his lead winning the third set.

The Aussie had a chance to take the fourth set but missed the chance to go for it with the score 5-4 in his favor. Khachanov took full advantage of Kokkinakis’ mistakes and took a break. Later in the tie-break, Kokkinakis led 4:1, but then missed all three submissions. Khachanov took 5 draws in a row and got two match points and converted the second.

For Khachanov, 27, this victory was the 20th at Roland-Garros and the 22nd this season with 10 defeats.

Meanwhile, ATP ranked No. 48 Sonego put on one of the best performances of his career against world No. 7 Andrey Rublev. The Russian had a solid lead in the match, winning the first two sets before Sonego bounced back to take the fourth set in a tie-break.

Inspired by the success, the Italian won the fifth set as well, claiming his first victory over a top 10 tennis player at TBS and the sixth victory of his career if you take all the tournaments.
