Ukrainian woman reached the fourth round of Roland Garros-2023
Ukrainian tennis player Lesya Tsurenko said that one of the incentives on the court for her is aid to Ukraine and the Ukrainian army.
“I have said many times that it was a difficult decision for me to stay in tennis. I think it really helped me that I started working more with a psychologist. I had panic attacks and it was very hard for me.”
“I’ll be honest – I want to earn as much as possible on the court in order to donate as much as possible. It’s actually a more important goal that I set for myself when I decided that I would keep playing and stay on the Tour.”
“I have never played for money before. Never in my life, going out on the court, did I think about how much prize money I would receive if I won. But a year ago there was a moment when I thought: well, maybe I will come back home and volunteer and do whatever is necessary for my country.”
“Then I had a conversation with Alex Dolgopolov, who helped me a lot. He told me, “Listen, we’ll do our job here, and you go on with your job and do what you can do best. He told me, you know, we need money. I agreed”.
“So I keep playing. I want to improve. I want to improve my game and I will donate. This is something I often do and it makes me feel better when I do it because I still feel guilty about not being in Ukraine. I do something really… And often when I have difficult moments in a match, I remind myself that I am from Ukraine, that I am part of the strongest nation, and I am proud that I am Ukrainian.”
After the start of the Russian military invasion of Ukraine, the ex-first racket of Ukraine Oleksandr Dolgopolov joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Also, the former tennis player is actively involved in humanitarian assistance.
Tsurenko in the third round of Roland Garros-2023 beat Bianca Andreescu from Canada. In the 1/8 finals, the Ukrainian will play with the first racket of the world, Iga Shventek.
