Athletistic/Tennis. The seventh day of Roland-Garros 2023 marked the end of the first week of the tournament. The third round singles matches took place, in which women’s top seed Iga Swiatek secured a place in the fourth round by beating Wang Xinyu 6-0, 6-0.

Ons Jaber, the seventh seed, also reached the 1/8 finals, returning after losing a set to Olga Danilovic – 4–6, 6–4, 6–2.

On the men’s side, Kasper Ruud, Holger Rune, Grigor Dimitrov and Alexander Zverev took their place in the fourth round.

The major events of the 7th day of “Roland Garros”

Departure of Mirra Andreeva, 16, and another Russian woman, Ekaterina Aleksandrova

16-year-old Mirra Andreeva’s run at the French Open ended when she lost 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-1 to No. 6 seed Coco Gauff.

The Russian was involved in a bit of drama in the first set tie-break. Failing to make two setballs, Andreeva sent the ball into the filled stands of the Suzanne Lenglen court. She escaped punishment, but received a warning.

At the post-match press conference, the Russian said that immediately after kicking the ball she realized she had acted stupidly. Then, from the third set point, Andreeva won the first game, but it did not help her. Gauff rallied for the second and third sets and demolished the Russian from the court, giving her just 2 games in straight sets. A good set against the sixth racquet in the world was not enough, but Andreeva has good prospects for the future.

After eliminating Andreeva, Gauff will face Anna Karolina Shmidlova in the fourth round of Roland-Garros.

Another Russian woman, Ekaterina Alexandrova, in a fairly equal fight lost to Beatrice Haddad Maya, 14th in the WTA rankings, from Brazil – 7: 5, 4: 6, 5: 7. At the same time, in the decisive third set , Alexandrova was leading 5:4 and had match point, but couldn’t convert it. Moreover, with the score 5:5, she gave up her serve and lost the decisive match 5:7.

In the 1/8 finals, Haddad Maia will play with Sara Sorribes-Tormo from Spain.

Elena Rybakina withdrew from the 2023 French Open

Women’s fourth seed Elena Rybakina has been forced to withdraw from the 2023 French Open due to illness. The Kazakhstan tennis player reached the third round of the tournament after wins over Czechs Brenda Fruhvirtova and Linda Noskova. Next, she was supposed to fight Sarah Sorribes-Tormo, but the match never happened.

Rybakina said she had a viral fever and a headache that made it impossible for her to run and even breathe. She hadn’t slept well for two days and had decided not to go out in the field.

Because “Roland Garros” is a big loss, Rybakina was one of the favorites. Sorribes-Tormo will face Beatriz Haddad Maia in the fourth round of the tournament.

Elimination of all Americans in the third round of Roland Garros

While three Americans have reached the second week of Roland-Garros, no tennis player has gone that far.

Taylor Fritz, Marcos Giron and Francis Tiafoe played their third round matches on day seven of the tournament and all three lost.

Fritz, seeded ninth, faced Francisco Cerundolo (23rd in the ATP rankings) and won the first set 6-3. However, the Argentine came to his senses and won the next three sets 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 and, for the first time in his career, secured a place in the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament.

The same fate befell Tiafoe against Alexander Zverev. The German returned to action after dropping a set and won the match 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-1, 7-6(5).

Marcos Giron also lost in four sets to Chilean Nicholas Harry, but won not the first, but the third – 2:6, 3:6, 7:6, 3:6.

Harry in the 1/8 finals will meet Kasper Ruud, Cherundulo – with Holger Rune and Zverev – with Grigor Dimitrov.

Iga Šwiętek looks invincible

Defending champion Iga Swiatek convincingly won her first two matches at Roland Garros, snagging two “wheels” from Spaniard Bucha and American Liu, then continued to not let Chinese Wang Xinyu win a only match in the third round.

It was the first time in history that the world No. 1 won 6-0, 6-0 at a Grand Slam tournament and the first time at Roland Garros since 2017 when Caroline Wozniacki beat Françoise Abanda .

Swiatek scored 50 of 67 points in Saturday’s game. She is yet to drop a set at Roland Garros this year and has given away only eight matches to her opponents so far. 21 of his 24 career wins at Roland Garos have come in double sets.

In the fourth round of “Roland Garros”, Shventek will meet Lesya Tsurenko from Ukraine.
