By beating Marta Kostyuk, Irina Shimanovich and Kamilla Rakhimova, Sobolenko reached the fourth round for the first time in Paris. She faced 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stevens for a spot in the quarter-finals.
Sobolenko took an early lead 5-0. Stevens then upped his game and gave the fight away, leveling the score. But Stevens didn’t have enough for more, the Belarusian rallied and managed to win the set, winning the ensuing tie-break.
Sobolenko took a 4-2 lead in the second set, but Stevens again managed to level the score. However, the comeback did not happen, the Belarusian tennis player won the match in straight sets – 7-6 (7: 5), 6-4.
Meanwhile, Svitolina beat Martina Trevisan, Storm Sanders and Anna Blinkova to advance to the fourth round of the tournament, where she faced world No. 9 Daria Kasatkina. The Ukrainian broke twice and took a 4-1 lead in the first set.
Kasatkina managed to play one of the breaks, but Svitolina still managed to retain the lead and end the set in her favor. After five breaks from the two tennis players in the second set, the Ukrainian led 4-3. She served for the match with a score of 5-4 and even won a match point, but could not convert it.
But then Svitolina immediately made another break and led 6-5, then on the second attempt she could not apply for the match, the set went into a tie-break.
In the tie-break for a long time there was an equal score and everything was decided by Kasatkina’s lost serve with the score 5:6. Svitolina converted the match point and won 6:4, 7:6. She reached the Roland Garros quarter-finals for the fourth time in her career, but never reached the semi-finals.
In personal meetings between Svitolina and Sobolenko, the draw was 1:1. Svitolina won the last meeting of the Strasbourg Open 2020 in three sets.
