Williams, 42, who is the older sister of 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, lost in the first round to Swiss representative Celine Nef – 6:3, 6:7 (3:7), 2: 6. The meeting lasted 2 hours and 18 minutes.
In the second round, 17-year-old Nef will face US No. 8 seed Cathy McNally.
Venus played in a WTA tournament for the first time since January 2023. Then she lost in the second round of the competition in New Zealand.
