Kudermetova plays on grass after a disappointing first-round elimination at Roland-Garros. She started the tournament in ‘s-Hertogenbosch against Alison Riske and took a 6-3, 3-0 lead before the American was forced to retire with injury. The Russian then beat Carol Zhao 6-1, 6-3 before beating Celine Naef 6-3, 6-2 to secure her place in the semi-finals.
Here she faced Victoria Kuzmova, earned two breaks in each set and won 6–3, 6–2 to reach her first singles final of the 2023 season.
Meanwhile, Ekaterina Aleksandrova is playing the Libema Open as the fourth seed and started the WTA 250 tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Evgenia Rodina. She then faced Kimberly Birrell and beat the Australian tennis player 6-4, 7-6.
In the quarter-finals, the Russian won 6-4, 6-4 over Emina Bektas and advanced to the semi-finals for seventh seed Aleksandra Sasnovich of Belarus. Alexandrova dominated the first set and won it 6-1. Sasnovich put up strong resistance in the second set, but the Russian managed to beat her in a tie-break to reach her first final of the 2023 season.
Kudermetova leads 2-1 in head-to-head matches with Alexandrova. Interestingly, their last meeting was in the semi-finals of last year’s tournament in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, where Aleksandrova won 6-2, 6-1 and then won the title beating Arina Sobolenko 7-5 , 6-0 in the end.
