Former World No. 2 Kontaveit to retire after Wimbledon 2023

Annette has back problems

Former second racket of the world, Estonian Anette Kontaveit announced her retirement.

The last tournament for the 27-year-old tennis player will be Wimbledon 2023. According to her, a back problem prevents the tennis player from continuing to perform at a professional level.

“After several visits to the doctors and consultations with my medical team, it turned out that I have degeneration of the lumbar disc in my back. This does not allow for full-fledged training and it is simply impossible to continue performing at the highest level in such a highly competitive field.

“It was important for me to represent the Estonian flag on the tennis courts and to be able to play in front of my fans and fans around the world. I am ready for new challenges after my last time as a professional tennis player – to enjoy the game and compete with all my might at Wimbledon.

Kontaveit has won six WTA titles and made a further ten final appearances. The best result at the Grand Slam tournaments is the quarter-finals of the Australian Open (2020).

Last year, Anette climbed to second place in the WTA rankings. Now the Estonian takes 79th place.

Wimbledon 2023 will take place from 3 to 16 July. 1 pound from each Wimbledon ticket sold will be transferred to help Ukraine.
