Sobolenko faced former Wimbledon finalist Vera Zvonareva in the first round. Arina got three break points on her opponent’s serve in the fourth game of the first set, but lost them all.
Sobolenko had another opportunity in game six and she managed to convert the first break point to take a 4-2 lead. She stayed ahead until the end of the set and won it 6:3. The Belarusian took Zvonareva’s serve early in the second set and took the lead. Sobolenko continued to dictate the game, then made another break, took the lead 5:2 and finished the match on his serve – 6:3, 6:2.
Meanwhile, Kudermetova faced Qinwen Zheng in the first match. The Chinese was the first to earn a break point in the first set with the score 3:4 in her favor, but couldn’t finish the job. The Russian didn’t make the same mistake, breaking in the following ninth game, taking a 5-4 lead and managing to hit a set, collecting two break points from Qinwen Zheng along the way.
The second set was one-sided: the Russian took Qinwen Zheng’s serve twice and won the match with the score 6:4, 6:2.
Sobolenko and Kudermetova have already met three times on the WTA Tour, Arina leads in matches with Veronika with a score of 2-1. Kudermetova won her last match just in Berlin at the Bett1open 2022 tournament in three sets.
