World No. 17 Elena Ostapenko rebounded from her first defeat when she beat Poland’s Magdalena Frech 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the quarter-finals in Birmingham on Friday.
Ostapenko, who had reached the Birmingham quarter-finals twice before, finally overcame that line and made it to the semi-finals.
Against Frech, the Latvian saved 8 of 11 break points and converted half of 10 to win her third straight match in three sets.
Ostapenko started the tournament beating Linda Noskova 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. She then knocked out veteran Venus Williams 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in the second round. In the quarter-finals
This is the second time Ostapenko has reached the semi-finals this year, having already reached that stage in Rome.
Ostapenko was also a quarter-finalist at the Australian Open that year.
The 26-year-old is aiming for her 14th WTA final. She has 5 victories in WTA tournaments, including 1 on grass and a loss.
Russia’s Anastasia Patapova saved 3 of 7 break points and used 5 of 12 break points she had to beat Britain’s Harriet Dart 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and six minutes.
It was the third straight match in which the 22-year-old Potapova lost the first set, but then rebounded and won the match.
In the first round, the Russian beat Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 6-4, and in the second round Potapova beat American Cathy McNally 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-0).
Potapova is 25-12 this season and will play her third semi-final in 2023. She won a title in Linz.
