The organizers of the Wimbledon tournament have tightened the rules for admitting Russian and Belarusian tennis players to the competition, reports the BBC.
At the end of March, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) and the UK Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) announced the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the tournament in a neutral status and under “certain conditions”, as well as by signing a declaration of neutrality.
According to the rules, tennis players participating in Wimbledon cannot receive funding from companies managed or controlled by people under sanctions. According to the publication, players must now provide proof that the agreements with these companies have been terminated.
It is alleged that adjustments to the rules were made in May at the request of the UK government.
The third Grand Slam of the season, Wimbledon, will take place from July 3 to 16. Last season, the Russians and Belarusians did not play in the UK.
