Tightened security at Wimbledon to thwart environmental activists

Wimbledon organizers have stepped up security measures to curb the activities of environmental activists, said Sally Bolton, executive director of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC).

People queuing to go to Monday’s tournament matches had to wait longer, spectators were carried away, in particular, deodorant in the form of a spray.

“Of course, we have taken into account what we have seen in other tournaments, so security measures have been reinforced in various places on the territory of the club.

We are really confident in the measures we have taken, but I think, as we have seen in other sporting events, that we cannot guarantee anything. We are absolutely convinced that the measures we have taken are the right ones.

We have baggage screening at all gates, as well as selective screening of people at the gate. We will do it based on intelligence, so there will be several searches. Each year, a group of so-called behavioral analysis inspectors is part of our security measures.

Earlier, activists from the Just Stop Oil movement had organized actions at the World Snooker Championship, a cricket match and the England Rugby Championship final. They usually spray orange powder.

Wimbledon runs from July 3-16.
