Elina beat the five-time Wimbledon champion in straight sets
Former first racket of Ukraine Elina Svitolina beat the legendary American tennis player Venus Williams in the first round Wimbledon 2023. Recall that both tennis players received a wild card from the organizers.
In the first set, Elina made one more break and won 6:4. Note that at the end of the third game, 43-year-old Williams suffered a leg injury, but managed to continue the fight.
In the second game, Svitolina made two more breaks and got the final victory – 6:3.
Venus Williams played in the Wimbledon singles draw for a record 24th time. The American became the champion of the tournament five times (2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008).
In the next round, Svitolina will play with the winner of the match Elise Mertens (Belgium) – Victoria Grunchakova (Slovakia).
Earlier, Lesya Tsurenko entered the second round of Wimbledon 2023, beating American Claire Liu in three sets. Katerina Beindl lost to Leila Fernandez at the start of the tournament.
Tomorrow, July 4, Angelina Kalinina and Marta Kostyuk will play the first round matches.
