Ukrainian in the first round of Wimbledon beat the eighth racket of the world Maria Sakkari
Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk commented on the victory over the eighth racket of the world Maria Sakkari from Greece in the first round Wimbledon 2023.
“First of all, I want to thank the audience for their support, for staying to watch this match, despite the pause due to rain. Probably never before have I had such a match that would be interrupted twice, so this is the first such experience.
“Every time I went to break, I felt different emotions, because I just couldn’t get the ball into the court. How did I try to keep my attention during the breaks? During breaks, I just cried. I tried to figure everything out. Perhaps this helped me, because I was inferior in the score, trying to return to the game. I just kept fighting.”
“I want to thank my team, my mother, Caroline, my coach Andrew, everyone who supported me. Without you, I wouldn’t have been able to do this. These past few days have not been easy. I don’t know how I will feel tomorrow, but today I will definitely celebrate a little.”
The Ukrainian lost the first set, but managed to win the next two. In the decisive game, Martha succeeded in a spurt of five games won in a row, after which she brought the match to victory.
Note that the match was postponed from Tuesday due to rain. Also, the match was interrupted due to adverse weather conditions already on Wednesday.
In the second round of Wimbledon, Marta Kostyuk will play against the winner of the match Alison Risk-Amritraj (USA) – Paula Badosa (Spain). The rivals have not had time to play their duel since Tuesday.
