More than 50 new vehicles debuted in Chile in the first half

The SUV segment was the most prolific with nearly 60% new or updated models in the first six months of the year.

The first half left a series of conclusions in the domestic auto industry. The most significant was the 28% drop in sales of new light and medium vehicles during the January-June period, compared to the same period a year earlier.

As reported by the National Automobile Association of Chile, in the first half of the year 159,211 units were sold compared to 222,453 last year, a decrease which, for the union entity, is due to “the contraction of the Chilean economy added to the weak internal demand, as well as the absence of existing agreements regarding the measures to be implemented to promote growth, investment and employment, continue to affect trade and, consequently, the automotive sector”.

Another relevant finding during the first half of the year was the rise of the Pickups segment to second place in importance, overtaking Passenger Vehicles for the first time on a half-yearly basis, which confirms the waning interest in sedans and hatchbacks. .

Regarding low and zero emission vehicles, Anac announced that between January and June there was an increase of 8.9% compared to the first half of 2022 and with 3,510 units sold, it became the best performance history for a first half in these categories.

Although still a low number, in this segment the growth of 100% electric vehicles has stood out, which increased by 40.5% in the first half of 2023 with 777 registered, while vehicles hybrids achieved 30% growth with a cumulative number of 1,470 units.

More than fifty premieres

Despite the drop in sales, the automotive industry was quite busy in the first six months of the year, with 55 releases including new models, updates and/or new versions.

It all started in the first half of January, when the Kaiyi brand debuted in the country. The Chinese firm arrived under the protection of Andes Motor and began its adventure with the KYX3 SUV and its KYX3 Pro version. From there 54 new disclosures were reported, ending in the last days of June with the arrival of the mighty BMW M2.

By segment, the one that leads correctly is that of SUVs (31 new products), followed by Passenger Vehicles (14), Vans (8) and Utility Vehicles (2).

As for all-new models, 17 all-new models have been added to the Creole market.

Thinking of new technologies, 6 models are 100% electric (BMW iX1, BMW i4, BYD Tang, BYD Han, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Citroën e-Berlingo).

In this segment of the most efficient vehicles, special mention to the premiere of the Nissan X-Trail ePower, a model that has opened up a new category of “green vehicles”, that of electric vehicles with extended autonomy. These are the models that only work with electric motors, but have a combustion engine that serves to regenerate the charge of the batteries.

As for the most radical firsts, the first place is occupied by the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, a model which, from its naturally aspirated 4.0-litre engine, develops 525 CV with a torque of 465 Nm. It is also the most expensive model to arrive in the first half, priced at $319,990.
