Athletistic/Tennis. The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) released a statement regarding the post-match handshakes between Ukrainian athletes and representatives of Russia and Belarus.
The WTA has taken the decision to officially state its position after the incident that took place after the 1/8 round match at Wimbledon between Elina Svitolina and Victoria Azarenka. The Belarusian tennis player refused to wait for a handshake from the Ukrainian athlete, as Svitolina had previously declared her rejection of this tradition in principle. However, the audience decided that it was Azarenka who refused to shake Svitolina’s hand and booed her. At a post-match press conference, a Ukrainian woman turned to the WTA to ask them to state their position.
“The WTA respects the position of Ukrainian athletes who refuse the traditional handshake with their Russian and Belarusian rivals at the end of the match, because it is their personal decision. We have some of the best fans in the world and we are grateful to for their passion and dedication, as well as their understanding and respect for the athletes,” the WTA said in a statement.
