The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) respects the Ukrainian athletes’ decision not to shake hands with Russians and Belarusians, the organization said in a statement.
Sunday Ukrainian Elina Svitolina beat belarusian Victoria Azarenka in the fourth round of Wimbledon with a score of 2:6, 6:4, 7:6 (11:9). After the meeting, the tennis players did not shake hands.
Due to unfortunate circumstances and a misunderstanding during yesterday’s match at Wimbledon (and other matches in recent weeks), the WTA would like to clarify the post-match handshake situation. In the context of ongoing hostilities, the WTA respects the position of Ukrainian athletes who refuse the traditional handshake with rivals (from Russia and Belarus), it is their personal decision, the WTA said in a statement on Twitter .
