Wimbledon organizers say they won’t interfere with tennis handshake policy

All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) chief executive Sally Bolton has said the club will not interfere with tennis players’ decision not to shake hands with their opponents at Wimbledon.

Sunday Ukrainian Elina Svitolina defeated Belarusian Victoria Azarenka in the fourth round of Wimbledon with a score of 2:6, 6:4, 7:6 (11:9). After the meeting, the tennis players did not shake hands.

“We will not tell the judges at Wimbledon to announce handshakes. Historically in tennis, the decision on how a player is going to react at the end of the match is his personal decision, and I think we don’t want to impose anything on him.

We have an incredibly knowledgeable crowd at Wimbledon and I think most people will understand what’s going on. I wouldn’t want to speculate on that,” Bolton quoted ESPN.

Earlier, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) said it respects the Ukrainian athletes’ decision not to shake hands with Russians and Belarusians.
