Athletistic/Tennis. The WTA press service issued a statement regarding post-match handshakes with the participation of Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian female tennis players. The organization responded to Elina Svitolina’s initiative.
She previously urged the WTA to clarify the situation. After the fourth round match with Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, the Ukrainian tennis player did not shake hands with her opponent. At the same time, fans booed Azarenka. They thought it was her who refused to shake hands.
“The WTA respects the position of the Ukrainian tennis players who refuse to shake hands with the representatives of Russia and Belarus. It is their personal decision,” the WTA said in a statement.
In the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, Svitolina will play with the first racket in the world, the Polish Iga Swiatek.
