Russian tennis player Romain Safiullin thanked fans for their support during the speech at Wimbledon.
The Russian lost Tuesday against the Italian Yannick Sinner in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, which takes place on grass in London.
– Last year, Russians were banned from playing at Wimbledon. How was the fan reception now?
– I don’t know. I mean, I felt a lot of support here. I also heard support phrases in Russian. There has been great support here.
– How much has this distracted from the bans?
“The fact that we are banned… I just accept it. I tried to play in some tournaments before. Last year I played in Stuttgart. Did not enter Halle main draw. Then I got injured and just missed out on Wimbledon. Basically, I trained and prepared for other tournaments,” Safiullin told a press conference.
Last year, athletes from Russia and Belarus were barred from Wimbledon, for which the men’s and women’s tours robbed the tournament of ranking points and imposed heavy fines on organizers.
