Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic said he considered himself a favorite for Wimbledon after reaching the semi-finals.
In the quarter-final, Djokovic (2nd seed) defeated Russian Andrey Rublev (7), who reached this stage for the first time at Wimbledon, with the score 4:6, 6:1, 6:4, 6:3. The tennis players spent 2 hours and 47 minutes on the court.
– Excellent match quality. I think we both played well. Yes, he played better at the end of the first set. But I managed to regroup and break his serve early in the second set. I think that was the key to really changing the momentum on my side.
He had his chances, I had mine. I’m very happy to have taken up Rublev’s challenge, I feel like he played at a very high level. I think it was the best match I played with him in Grand Slams when we played each other.
I think he showed incredible tennis today. He put a lot of pressure, played very fast. To be honest, it was like a dogfight on the ground. At times, the match turned out to be so long and exhausting. Those draws at the end of the third set, where, to be honest, the outcome of the match was mostly decided.
I felt a huge relief when I won the third set, and in the fourth I made another decisive break.
Of course, Rublev played better quality tennis today than in our previous matches with him at Grand Slam tournaments.
– Considering the tennis you are playing at the moment, you only lost two sets, you are the defending champion, do you consider yourself a favourite?
“I don’t want to sound arrogant, but of course I would consider myself the favourite. Judging by my results here, the previous four Wimbledon wins and reaching the semi-finals, I consider myself a favourite, yes said Djokovic at a press conference.
In the semi-finals of Wimbledon, the current winner of the tournament, Djokovic will meet the Italian Yannick Sinner (8), who had previously beaten the Russian Roman Safiullin.
