Svitolina: I’m just happy that I can give Ukrainians a little joy

Svitolina reached the 1/2 finals of Wimbledon

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina commented on her victory over the first racket of the world Igoy Sventek in 1/4 finals Wimbledon 2023.

“I know that in Ukraine a lot of people watch matches. After the last round, I received just a crazy amount of messages. I am happy that I can bring a little happiness into their lives. There were many videos on the Internet of children watching my game on their phones. My heart just melts when I see this. I’m just happy that I can give Ukrainians some joy.”

“I know there are a few matches left to win. But I don’t want to think about it. Marketa is a tough opponent. This will be a difficult test for me. Therefore, I do not want to rush things and think about what I can play or not play in the final. These are the things that greatly hinder your thinking.”

“We are really very grateful to the organizers for the additional support they provided. Generally speaking, of course, everything that the UK has done and is doing for Ukrainians is incredible. There are not enough words to express all our gratitude for the fact that they are doing everything in their power. I have heard so many stories and they are wonderful. Truly incredible.”

“A return to Wimbledon Center Court? It was something crazy. I can’t describe it in one word. We had a lot of great draws, a lot of beautiful games, a lot of difficult situations. Great atmosphere, I just enjoyed the match. Although I was upset that I could not win in two sets. But Iga also played incredibly, it is her merit that she won the second game. Then I tried to regain the initiative, again and again, and in the end I won.”

“Iga is a wonderful person, a great champion. She has done a lot and is still doing for Ukraine. In Ukraine, we admire her. So in a certain way, when you play against your good buddy, it’s difficult because you don’t want to see her lose. That is, such a moment is also present. When I wasn’t performing, I was always rooting for Iga. I was very happy for her results, I was amazed at everything she achieved. These are truly outstanding results. So, to be honest, it was quite difficult to play.”

“The Ukrainian military, what they are doing for our country, is really unrealistic. Words of my gratitude for their courage, for all that they go through, will not suffice. To go to war for your country – it really requires a lot. I am very, very grateful to our defenders for everything they do for Ukraine. And I want to say that all Ukrainians, that we are all here to help them win this war.”

In the 1/2 finals of Wimbledon 2023, Svitolina will meet with Marketa Vondrousova on July 13. The Czech in the quarterfinals beat the fourth racket of the world Jessica Pegula (6:4, 2:6, 6:4).

Svitolina reached the 1/2 finals of Wimbledon for the second time in her career. In total, this is the third semi-final for Elina at the Grand Slam tournaments.

In addition, Svitolina will regain the status of the first racket of Ukraine thanks to a successful performance at Wimbledon 2023. Elina will take 27th place after the new WTA rating update.
