Second racket in the Belarusian world Arina Sobolenko believes that the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) did the right thing by issuing a statement after the Ukrainian athletes’ decision not to shake hands with Russians and Belarusians.
On Sunday, Ukrainian Elina Svitolina defeated Belarusian Victoria Azarenka in the fourth round of Wimbledon, after the match the tennis players did not shake hands. When the Belarusian left the pitch, the fans whistled her. Later, the WTA said that the organization respects the position of Ukrainian women.
– I mean the players understand everything. I saw the WTA message. It is very good that they made such a statement. I think people should also know what is going on and why there is no handshake between Ukrainian, Russian and Belarusian players.
It is good that there is such a statement. I really hope that no one else will face such a reaction from the fans,” quotes ASAP Sports Sobolenko.
On Wednesday, Sobolenko reached the semi-finals of the Wimbledon tournament by defeating American Madison Keys.
