Friday 14 July is match day for the men’s singles semi-finals at Wimbledon. The first will feature Yannick Sinner and Serbian Novak Djokovic. The meeting promises to be very interesting and stubborn. No doubt the Italian will try to impose a fight on the eminent Serbian and he will have a chance to beat the most successful tennis player in history for the first time. However, Russian tennis fans are much more interested in the second semi-final, in which Daniil Medvedev will face Spaniard Carlos Alcaras. For the first time in his career, our tennis player will play the 1/2 finals at Wimbledon and will try not to stop there.
Interestingly, the first face-to-face meeting between Medvedev and Alcaraz took place just at Wimbledon two years ago. Then the Spaniard was only 18 years old and he didn’t even have a seeded number in the tournament. The paths of Daniil and Carlos crossed in the second round match, after which our tennis player celebrated the victory in three sets – 6:4, 6:1, 6:2. This season, Alcaraz and Medvedev met in the final at the Indian Wells Masters, then the Spaniard was able to get a convincing revenge – 6:3, 6:2. The tennis players will therefore play among themselves for the third time and the final of the Grand Slam tournament is at stake.
The road to the semi-finals Daniil Medvedev, 27, was quite confident. Until the quarter-finals, the Russian did not experience particularly difficult matches. But with American Eubanks, as they say, I had to tinker. After winning the first set, Daniil suddenly experienced a slump in the game and the Russian lost two games in a row. In the fourth set, our tennis player was about to lose the match, but still managed to pull himself together and dominated his opponent in a tie-break. Having received a psychological advantage, Medvedev put pressure on the American in the fifth set.
Alcaraz is very motivated to reach the Wimbledon final for the first time in his career and not allow Djokovic (in personal encounter or in absentia) to select the title of first racket in the world. So far, Carlos is doing well in London. The Spaniard didn’t even notice Danish prodigy Rune in the quarter-finals, who is playing at a very high level this season. It will be very difficult for Medvedev to beat Alcaraz, but there are always chances. If Daniil manages to impose his tactics on the Spaniard, then the first racquet in the world is likely to falter.
