Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic noted the universalism of the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz after losing the Wimbledon final.
The encounter, which lasted all five sets, took place on Sunday and ended 1:6, 7:6 (8:6), 6:1, 3:6, 6:4 in favor of ‘Alcaraz.
Do you think this is the start of a great rivalry?
– I hope so, for my good (smiles). He’s going to be on tour for a while. I don’t know how long I will be.
Let’s see, we only played three games against each other. Three very close matches. Two already this year in the later stages of the Grand Slam tournaments.
I hope we will play at the US Open. Why not? I think it’s good for tennis, the first and second rackets in the world meet in a thriller of almost five hours in five sets. What could be better for our sport as a whole, so why not?
If you had to choose one quality that you think is Alcaraz’s strength, what would it be? Is there anyone else you have played or seen playing with in the past that you would compare Carlos to?
— I think his game is made up of some elements of Roger [Федерера]Raffa [Надаля] and me. He has a psychological stability and maturity that is not typical of people in their twenties. It’s quite impressive. He has the Spanish bull mentality, the competitiveness, the fighting spirit and the incredible defense that we have seen from Rafa over the years.
He has good backhands like mine. Yes, left backhand, defense, adaptability. I think that’s been my forte for many years. He has it too.
To be honest, I’ve never played with a player like him. Roger and Rafa have their own obvious strengths and weaknesses. Carlos is the perfect player. Incredible adaptability, which I think is the key to longevity and a successful career on all surfaces,” Djokovic told a press conference.
The 20-year-old Spaniard won Wimbledon for the first time and won a Grand Slam for the second time in his career. Alcaraz has already won the US Open 2022. Djokovic has 23 wins in BS tournaments, the 36-year-old tennis player has won Wimbledon seven times.
