This is their first joint WTA title.
Ludmila Kichenok became the champion of the WTA doubles tournament in Birmingham. 29-year-old Ukrainian performs at grass competitions in tandem with a representative of Latvia Elena Ostapenko.
In the final match, Kichenok and Ostapenko were to play with the tandem of Alice Mertens (Belgium) and Zhang Shuai (China). However, the match did not take place due to Shuai’s injury, which the tennis player received during today’s singles final.
For Kichenki and Ostapenko, the victory in Birmingham was the first joint win at the WTA level. This season, the representatives of Ukraine and Latvia reached the finals at the WTA 500 tournament in Dubai.
Next week, the duo of Lyudmila Kichenok and Elena Ostapenko will perform at the WTA 500 tournament in Eastbourne, England.
